There was someone that I thought I would see today and I didn’t, that’s all…

Stefan - made royal, crowned; the first Christian martyr
Okay, but, the significance of being crowned in the Christian tradition, guys. You want a king? He’s going to make you a slave. You want to be a good king? Be a servant. You want to be a leader, show people the way? They will murder you for it. You finally get your crown, a crown you deserve, and along with it you get the perspective to understand that all the accolades you deserve are nothing compared to the praise you can and should dole out so you take it off and lay it at the feet of God.
And that is all just so Stefan. Stefan, the second son honored above the first. Stefan “I heard you scream” / “I can’t think of a better reason to die” Salvatore. The legendary ripper whose shadow over a city made women walk a little faster and mothers clutch their children tight. Tell me this isn’t a man who knows what power is - and he knows how it weighs on a soul. He has been elevated so far above us mere mortals that our lives are nothing to him but playthings and he has realized how wrong that is. Through his honor he has been brought so low that his life is merely an instrument. Seconds, minutes, days, centuries - all are worth nothing if he does not put them to good use and if that means he dies then so be it.
He tells us himself he’s named after a martyr. No other sort of death will satisfy. It’s not that he’s suicidal or has a martyr complex. He doesn’t think so highly of himself that he believes he should live up to his name. He thinks so low of himself that he never thinks he can live up to it and that makes him reckless with his own life.
