And here he is. Respecting Elena’s decision once again. Once again seeing that this may be the last moment they spend together. He could’ve fed her his blood. But he didn’t because he knew she’d rather be dead.

You remember when Caroline’s dad was dying and Elena told Caroline that all her dad had were his believes? Now look at what Stefan did. I don’t think that many of us can imagine loving someone so much that you’ll forget for a second how you feel and how you want to save them and you’ll just respect that person’s last wish. That no matter how hard it is, you will let them die with their dignity, as humans, with their believes. Sure, many will say that Stefan should’ve saved Elena if he truly loved her, but how would she forgive him for letting Matt die?

I’ve realized one thing - all we want is to be loved and respected in life. Stefan kissed Elena, showing her how much he loved her. And then he respected her by making her last wish come true. Because he knows how much her friends mean to Elena and he knows how Elena will never forgive herself if she lived and Matt died. So Stefan just couldn’t disappoint her. Even if it meant losing her, sacrificing what they have. But as Klaus said ‘That kind of love never dies’ and Stefan knew it. He knew that no mater what happens their love will always be alive.

My mum used to tell me that love’s greatest measure is sacrifice and I always wondered why. Well, today I know why.

"Damon was lying in the middle of the road in the flashback because he was hunting, waiting for his next kill. The only thing that stopped him from feeding on Elena was her resemblance to Katherine. Stefan jumped into the water when he saw the car crash BEFORE he ever saw Elena’s face. Before he ever knew she looked like Katherine, he was going to save them. A random family. People who he didn’t know and had no obligation to whatsoever. He tried to help them. That is Stefan Salvatore. And that is why Kevin Williamson said that Stefan is the true tragic hero of the show. And that is why he will always be better for Elena than Damon is. Because in Elena’s final moments of her life, he gave her the same thing that he gave to her father before he died. Hope. Hope that this one person who jumped into the water would save their loved one. Hope that if they couldn’t survive, at least their loved one would. Elena, like her father, chose to save someone else, and both times, Stefan obliged. And the strength of that decision is a strength that Damon doesn’t have and probably never will have. To do what is right over what you want. Everything was screaming at Stefan in that moment to save Elena, to save the girl he loves. But he chose to honor her wishes over his own. He chose to save someone she loves first. Because Stefan understands Elena. And he knew that Matt’s survival meant more to her than her own. And he gave that to her. In her dying moments, he gave her the thing she wanted most. I don’t care what ANYONE says. Stefan is selfless. And his decision to save Matt was THE single most selfless act I’ve ever seen on the show. That is why I choose to always believe in Stefan, no matter what the writers put him through or whatever trial he has to overcome, I always know at the end of the day that, it’s STEFAN. He will pull through. Because deep down, he is good. He may forget that every once a while, go to dark places, but he will always return. He will always be Stefan. And I wouldn’t want to have it any other way."

Stefan - made royal, crowned; the first Christian martyr

Okay, but, the significance of being crowned in the Christian tradition, guys. You want a king? He’s going to make you a slave. You want to be a good king? Be a servant. You want to be a leader, show people the way? They will murder you for it. You finally get your crown, a crown you deserve, and along with it you get the perspective to understand that all the accolades you deserve are nothing compared to the praise you can and should dole out so you take it off and lay it at the feet of God.

And that is all just so Stefan. Stefan, the second son honored above the first. Stefan “I heard you scream” / “I can’t think of a better reason to die” Salvatore. The legendary ripper whose shadow over a city made women walk a little faster and mothers clutch their children tight. Tell me this isn’t a man who knows what power is - and he knows how it weighs on a soul. He has been elevated so far above us mere mortals that our lives are nothing to him but playthings and he has realized how wrong that is. Through his honor he has been brought so low that his life is merely an instrument. Seconds, minutes, days, centuries - all are worth nothing if he does not put them to good use and if that means he dies then so be it.

He tells us himself he’s named after a martyr. No other sort of death will satisfy. It’s not that he’s suicidal or has a martyr complex. He doesn’t think so highly of himself that he believes he should live up to his name. He thinks so low of himself that he never thinks he can live up to it and that makes him reckless with his own life.
